For Valentine's Day

It's the thought that counts. She'd heard it a million times, but it had never made sense to her. She much preferred an expensive gift to a thought. What good did a thought do her? And if someone bought her something expensive, then she knew they were thinking good thoughts, not crappy, cheap, dollar store thoughts. After all, if the thought really did count, then what thought was behind carnations or chocolate-flavoured candies? Weren't there better thoughts behind roses and truffles? The best intentions behind diamonds and champagne?

Not that anyone she knew could afford diamonds and champagne. She supposed she would settle for roses and truffles, if that was the best they could do. But secretly, she was always a little disappointed when she opened a present and nothing sparkled back at her.
